It's a dressage saddle.well it's a saddle built on an AP tree with a dressage flap, so not a true full on dressage saddle. The seat is very open & the stirrup bars are placed further forward than a regular dressage saddle.
It has been died black. The wear you're seeing on the leather is minimal. I would guess there was some color discrepancies in the original brown color & that was part of why someone choose to die it black.
If you email Passier the serial # they will get back to you quickly with more info, like the tree size & the year it was made. As for price, you couldn't get me to spend more than $500 on that saddle - even that is really pushing it for that saddle, though you might get it. Great saddle, if you like 'old school' without all the bulk and cavernously deep seat. I have the PSL VD AP. The trees are very adjustable with short points.
Passier told you what the original width was, but get a shot of the front and compare it to your wither tracing. 5 in the serial someplace means 'wide' as I recall, I would have guessed wide to XW because there is a Shively saddle cover sitting next to it.
Any horse that can wear a Shively would need W or XW in any saddle line that was more geared toward TB type builds. Price: I have no idea.
I paid $600 used for my PSL VD with knee rolls missing, but it's in really nice condition and that was also prior to the 2008-2009 recession, so used saddle prices were still high. You'll just have to Google and check ad boards and see what people are asking for them. The build quality (superb) plus tree adjustability keeps prices high.
You'd not find a $350 Passier unless it's been really thrashed. Age doesn't matter much because they are very long-lasting saddles. If that's a W or XW, it still has great value to an Arabian rider for a show hack saddle. Lovatt & Ricketts are $2700 new, so paying $600 - $700 for that used Passier in that nice condition might not not be outrageous.
Only a saddle with a perfect fit can ensure that a horse can move optimally and perform at its best. If the saddle does not fit correctly, then the horse is limited in its freedom of movement and may develop painful pressure points. Important for the perfect saddle-fit is the precise measurement of the horse’s back and the lengthwise line of the spine. For the measurement you will need a flexible piece of wire (recommended is baling wire, about 2 mm (1/10”) in diameter and 50 cm (20”) long), which lies closely on horse’s back so no space is left between the wire and the horse’s back, and our.
